The Year in Review and ?Where to Next?? Interventional Cardiology 2007
2006 has been an exceptional year for advances in interventional cardiology. These developments have demonstrated both the positive and negative aspects of important clinical advances. New devices and studies have focused our attention on unexpected events related to drug-eluting stents (DES), the approaching deployment of catheter-based percutaneous valvular implantation and repair, new devices for chronic total occlusions and forthcoming bioabsorbable stents.

The Smaller Contenders for the DES Market
The progress of the major stent manufactures for drug-eluting stent (DES) FDA approval and marketing is well-documented. Boston Scientific Corporation and Cordis Corporation are now battling it out for dominance of this multi-billion dollar industry. Guidant is soon to become a division of Johnson & Johnson or Boston Scientific, and Medtronic is working diligently to receive FDA approval so they can also enter this lucrative market. However, few know that a growing number of smaller companies have also developed DES products.

Angiolink's Staple-Mediated VCD Addresses Limitations of Current Technology Part II
Our vascular closure devices today have significant limitations (Table 1). What we really need to do is to develop an ?ideal? vascular closure device (VCD). Thankfully, there are new technologies coming out that hopefully are addressing this issue. Figure 1 is a novel device called the Angiolink EVS? staple device. It is not yet FDA-approved, but Angiolink has just finished doing a pivotal trial and anticipate approval in the fall of 2004. We have worked on this project with Angiolink (Tauton, Massachusetts) for 4 years.

CEU Offering: Advanced Stenting Strategies for Complex Coronary Artery Bifurcation Lesions
Percutaneous coronary stenting of bifurcation lesions constitute a challenge for interventional cardiology. It is continuously a main focus of discussion among invasive cardiologists, and has been for over 20 years.

The Indiana Heart Hospital
What is the size of your cath lab facility and number of staff members? The Indiana Heart Hospital (TIHH), as part of the Community Health Network, has three cath lab sites with a total of 11 labs. TIHH is the flagship cardiology hospital for a large hospital network. We have four cardiac rooms, two electrophysiology (EP) rooms and one peripheral vascular (PV) room. There are two other hospitals in our network: Community South (CHS), with 2 cath labs, and Community East (CHE), also with 2 cath labs. These two hospitals allow TIHH to float staff between all three hospitals according to shifts in patient volume.
