Cath Lab Spotlight

Bakersfield Heart Hospital

VOLUME: PUBLICATION DATE: Aug 01 2010

Author(s): Brian Dees, RCIS, Radiologic Technologist Lead, Bakersfield Heart Hospital Catheterization Laboratory; Atul Aggarwal, MD, FACC, FSCAI, FAHA, Central Cardiology Medical Clinic, Interventional Cardiologist, Clinical Assistant Professor, UCLA; Bakersfield, California

Tell us about your cath lab.
Bakersfield Heart Hospital is a 47-bed cardiac specialty hospital. The cath lab has four procedure rooms joined by a central control room. Having a central control room works well, since all staff immediately knows when a case begins and is completed, helping in efficient turnover. Two of our rooms predominantly serve as coronary procedure suites. One has a flat-panel imaging system (GE Medical Systems, Waukesha, WI) and the second has an image intensifier GE system. Both rooms also have the iLab intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) (Boston Scientific, Natick, MA). Our third room is predominantly used as the peripheral procedure room, with a flat-panel GE system equipped with all inventory for complex peripheral percutaneous interventions. The fourth room has an image intensifier system and is used for electrophysiology procedures (EP), including EP studies and pacemaker/defibrillator placements.

University of Kansas Hospital - Center for Advanced Heart Care

VOLUME: 18 PUBLICATION DATE: May 01 2010

Author(s): Mark Reichuber, RN, BSN, Peter Tadros, MD, FSCAI, FACC, Kansas City, Kansas

The University of Kansas Hospital-Center for Advanced Heart Care opened October 2006 and houses the Lynn H. Kindred, MD, Cardiac Catheterization Labs. There are three dedicated interventional labs with an additional shelled room for future use. The first room is dedicated to purely cardiac procedures. The second room is versatile for cardiac, peripheral, and structural heart disease procedures. The third room houses our first-generation hybrid suite and allows utilization by interventional cardiologists, vascular surgeons and cardiothoracic surgeons for endovascular procedures and limited open procedures.

The control rooms are integrated into the interior of each cath lab. There is a central core for staff and equipment that facilitates efficient flow between all three rooms. Furthermore, the transparency of the rooms from the core allows personnel to identify needs and allocate staff to emergent or complex cases.
