Carolinas Medical Center (CMC) is the flagship facility of Carolinas HealthCare System. As one of the Carolinas’ largest hospitals, it serves as a quaternary referral center for a 29-county multi-state region and portions of the Southeast and beyond. CMC opened in 1940 and has 795 beds. The cardiac cath lab is the third largest in the state.

All labs are single-plane.

A 24-bed prep & recovery unit is immediately adjacent to the labs. Eight of the 24 beds are staffed on all three shifts from Monday to Saturday noon. The labs are scheduled Monday through Friday from 0700 to 1700. The remaining hours are covered by an on call team.

What types of procedures are performed at your facility?

We perform diagnostic procedures (right and left cath, intravascular ultrasound, myocardial biopsy), percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) (stenting, rotoblator, thrombectomy, and brachytherapy), and cardiac electrophysiology procedures [EPS, ablation, cardioversion, tilt table test, implantation of pacemakers, event monitors, automatic intracardiac defibrillators (AICDs) and biventricular devices, and post-implant defibrillator testing]. In addition, Tomball Regional Hospital is an accredited chest pain center. Chest pain patients that come through the Emergency Department are monitored in the Observation Unit.

The cardiovascular cath lab team consists of MDs, who are board-certified, RNs, LVN, RT(R)s, MA and CVT students.

We do coronary angiograms, angioplasties and stenting, intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) and Pressure Wire® (Radi Medical Systems, Wilmington, MA), intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP) insertions, temporary and permanent pacemaker insertion, automatic implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (AICDs) and bi-ventricular pacemakers, electrophysiology studies and ablations, cardioversions, arteriovenous (AV) fistulograms and fistula angioplasties, difficult peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC lines), carotid stenting, peripher

Room three is also the peripherals room. It has digital subtraction technology and is equipped for electrophysiology procedures (EP)/ablations. Room four is the main electrophysiology lab, which uses the EP-WorkMate® Electrophysiology Workstation (EP MedSystems, Inc., Mt. Arlington, NJ) for standard studies as well as the Carto system (Biosense Webster, Inc., a Johnson & Johnson company, Diamond Bar, CA) for three-dimensional mapping. All of our rooms can be configured for device implantation. The Day Patient Area, which handles most of our pre- and post-angiography volume, has eleven rooms.

We have 18 full-time clinical staff, consisting of RNs, RT(R)s, and CVTs. The staff that are employed here all have significant amounts of interventional radiology, cath lab, and cardiology experience. The average experience for our staff is over five years in the lab.
