Boston Scientific Addresses Safety Concerns in Drug-Eluting Stents

Figure 1. The meta-analysis of the TAXUS trials and the pooled analysis of the Cypher trials show similar rates of stent thrombosis occurring between six months and three years.Figures 2A and 2B. There is no statistically significant increase in death or MI in the TAXUS Stent compared to BMS, despite instances of stent thrombosis occurring between six months and three years.Figure 3. The TAXUS Stent has a sustained >50 percent reduction in target lesion revascularization at three years.

The Impact of DES
Since their introduction in 2003, drug-eluting stents (DES) have shown clear and substantial benefits in patients with coronary artery disease. Compared to their predecessors, bare-metal stents (BMS), DES reduce rates of restenosis and the subsequent need for repeat procedures by more than half (i.e., from ~ 20% to ~ 10%, or even less when no routine angiographic follow-up is performed). This represents a significant step forward in interventional cardiology, and saves many thousands of patients every year from the potential complications associated with restenosis an

Is the Honeymoon Over?A Commentary on the Controversy Surrounding Drug-Eluting Stents and the DES Meta-Analysis

VOLUME: 15 PUBLICATION DATE: Feb 01 2007

How often have you heard that from a patient? This question has been posed to me numerous times over the course of the past twenty years. Sometimes the more you know, the harder it becomes to answer the question.

Back in the early days of my cath lab career, the answer was relatively easy; with single lesion/vessel disease, go ahead, stick in a balloon. We all knew that if the disease was more complex, if it involved multiple vessels, that coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) wasn't necessarily a four-letter word. In those early days of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTC

Intravascular Ultrasound in the Cath Lab: A powerful and underutilized tool to improve patient outcomes

Note an innocuous-appearing lucency in the mid right coronaryartery on proximal edge of a Cypher stent. The IVUS examinationof this same region discloses a severe proximal edge dissectionwith a flap of plaque inside the stent. Left untreated, this pati

Is there enough awareness in the interventional community about intravascular ultrasound (IVUS)?

From my perspective, the answer is clearly no. IVUS is a powerful tool that is not being properly utilized. It is under-considered and too many excuses are given for not using it. Have the issues with drug-eluting stents and stent thrombosis been a wake-up call?
It has been a wake-up call. Of course, early on when this issue came up, all the focus was on the stent technology itself. People talked about how maybe we shouldn’t be putting
