The Cardiovascular Technology Program at Grossmont College

Why and how did you become an educator?

I graduated from the Navy Cardiopulmonary School in Bethesda, Maryland in 1964. I served as a staff technologist at the Naval Medical Research Center at Bethesda, and later at the Naval Hospital in Portsmouth, Virginia. In 1971, I was assigned as the Senior Instructor in the Navy Cardiopulmonary School at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego. To prepare for that assignment, I attended a special course of instruction in the Techniques of Teaching and Naval Leadership.

While teaching in the Navy program, I discovered that, while I had always en

Learning Objectives.

At the conclusion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

Explain how thrombi are generated and their role in acute coronary syndromes

Describe the multiple pathways leading to platelet activation

Define the role of different adjunctive therapies in inhibiting thrombus formation

Compare the efficacy and safety of different adjunctive therapies in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI)

Activity instructions. Successful completion of this activity entails reading the article, answering the test

Letter to the Editor

In response to the Letters to the Editor in the January issue of Cath Lab Digest (Laissez Faire Facilities and JCAHO & In Compliance with MIOSHA/OSHA?), our cath lab has never required the staff to wear hat/masks during LHC/interventions, only pacers, AICD, when there is an open wound. In our 10 year history we have not had any problems with increased infections in patients or staff exposure problems (we wear protective glasses). We do over 3000 cases a year, work with a dozen cardiologists.

This is not laissez faire attitude and we are not scrambling to meet standards. We have passe

What Do You Think?

Patient Follow Up

Our lab is going to start following patients after discharge to home. The plan is to call patients at home and ask them various questions about their post-hospital recovery period. We’d like to know what other labs do in regards to:

Follow up time-frame;

How they document these interviews;

What questions are asked during the interview;

Where is the data stored;

Who is responsible for accomplishing this (i.e. cath lab nurses/techs, clinic staff, same day admissions);

What is your staffing ratio;

How is time allotted to complete this task

Cath Lab Digest Email Discussion Group

The following Email Discussion Group was sponsored by the Society for Invasive Cardiovascular Professionals (SICP).

Does your hospital plan on stocking drug-eluting stents? If yes, will you have strict criteria for usage?

Patient Selection Criteria Under Discussion

We are going to begin performing interventions without surgery in January and have been watching the news very closely with regards to drug-eluting stents. We are hoping/planning to stock them when they become available. In our discussions with the physician who is coming as our interventionalist, we have

HIV Drugs Don’t Increase Heart Risk

Fears that the drugs used to treat people infected with HIV cause an increased risk of heart attack and stroke appear to be unfounded, at least over the short term, researchers report.

While it is possible there is a long-term risk, it is overwhelmed by the benefits of drug treatment, says study author Dr. Samuel A. Bozzette, director of health research at the San Diego Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

If you look at the total risk of death or heart attack, people will still be enormously better off with treatment, Bozzette says.
