The Role of Radiographic Contrast Media in Invasive Angiographic Procedures: Innocent Bystander or Important Player?

During the last two decades, there have been consistent improvements in acute and long-term outcomes of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Dramatic reductions in the rates of serious in-hospital major adverse clinical events (MACE), including death, myocardial infarction, and emergent bypass surgery, have accompanied the introduction of stents and the subsequent optimal use of antithrombotic and antiplatelet agents. Improvements have also been seen in long-term outcomes, with significant reductions in repeat revascularization procedures.

A Regional, Multi-Hospital Consortium for Quality Improvement in Coronary Angioplasty

How did the consortium come into existence?

We’ve always been interested in clinical outcomes of coronary intervention, and how to improve those outcomes. In 1997, it occurred to us that single institutions don’t have the ability to collect an adequate amount of data that will allow for a meaningful evaluation of some of the risk factors of adverse events from coronary interventions. Also, single institutions cannot compare themselves with others unless they have access to other institutions’ data and/or they have a collaborative effort with other inst

Initial U.S. Experience with Magnetic Assisted Coronary Intervention (MAI): Trinity Mother Frances Health System Initiates MAI

Trinity Mother Frances Heart Institute is one of the first in the world to utilize the AXIOM Artis dFC Magnetic Navigation System, dedicated to both magnetic-assisted interventional cardiology and electrophysiology studies.

The Artis dFC Magnetic Navigation System integrates Siemens Medical Solutions’ digital fluoroscopic imaging system, the AXIOM Artis dFC (flat panel detector system), with Stereotaxis, Inc.’s Niobe® Magnetic Navigation System, to direct and digitally control catheter- and guidewire-based devices along complex paths within the heart and coronary vascula

The AdvaMed Code of Ethics: What Does It Mean for Your Interactions With Industry Professionals?

In the wake of increased federal investigation into wrong-doing between physicians and drug manufacturers, the world’s largest medical technology trade association has updated its ethical code to help medical technology companies and physicians identify appropriate hospitality, gifts, charitable contributions, and reimbursement practices.

AdvaMed, the Advanced Medical Technology Association, which represents more than 1,100 medical technology firms and their subsidiaries that produce 90 percent of the medical products sold annually in the United States, has updated its Code o

Hispanic Teens Face High Chances of Heart Disease, Diabetes

An alarming number of Hispanic pre-teens have at least one risk factor for cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes.

One study found three in 10 Hispanic pre-teens have metabolic syndrome, which comprises numerous risk factors for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The risk factors associated with metabolic syndrome include: high blood pressure; low levels of HDL cholesterol; central obesity; elevated triglycerides; and impaired glucose tolerance.

This high rate of metabolic syndrome may be due to the fac
