Simulation Training: Coming to a Lab Near You
Introduction by Donald S. Baim, MD, Director, Center for Integrating Medicine and Innovative Technology (CIMIT), Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Boston, Massachusetts
In a time when new devices and procedures are constantly being introduced, and operators must be educated in the techniques for their safe and successful use, simulation training offers a unique enhancement to the prior format of using a didactic lecture plus an animal or demonstration case. If that didactic lecture is supplemented by a series of simulator cases highlighting the procedural obstacles, the operator is forced to recognize and react to them in real time. This adds a level of realism to the training and can accelerate the learning curve. Simulation thus provides a realistic yet risk-free environment in which to enhance skills, work on challenging clinical scenarios or learn to use a new device without exposing real patients to additional risk.
