LAS VEGAS (May 24, 2019)– Ehtisham Mahmud, MD, FSCAI, director of the Cardiovascular Catheterization Laboratory and Interventional Cardiology at UCSD Medical Center and practicing at UC San Diego Health's Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center in La Jolla, CA, has assumed office as 2019-20 president of the Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions (SCAI). SCAI introduced a new slate of officers during its 2019 Scientific Sessions in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Dr. Mahmud is a former chair of SCAI’s Education Committee. In this role, he expanded SCAI’s national and international education portfolio and established and enhanced opportunities for training in procedural skills. He has served on SCAI’s Executive Councils and Committees for several years and developed new strategic initiatives for the Society, particularly for SCAI’s publications, education programs, and development.
Dr. Mahmud earned his medical degree at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Canada, and completed his residency training at UC San Diego School of Medicine. He also completed fellowships in coronary and peripheral vascular interventions at Emory University in Atlanta and cardiovascular medicine at UC San Diego. He now leads one of the largest academic cardiovascular programs in the western United States and directs the Interventional Cardiology and Cardiac Cath Lab at UC San Diego School of Medicine.
During his term as president, Dr. Mahmud will focus on increasing SCAI’s international partnerships, educational offerings, and preparing the next generation of interventional cardiologists.
