Make good use of your passion for clinical excellence and compassion for patients, as you provide optimal nursing care in accordance with established standards and practices. This professional will be a Cardiac EP Tech or an EP RN and will assist with all procedures performed in the EP, including the implantation of permanent pacemakers, ICDs, and Bi-V-ICDs; and assist in the cleaning and restocking of the lab as needed.

Whether qualifying as a Cardiac EP Tech or Cardiac EP RN, this individual must be competent in the use of the EP monitoring/stimulation system, Intra cardiac Echo and 3D mapping systems, and sterile technique; demonstrate a high degree of understanding of the interpretation of cardiac arrhythmias and all invasive EP procedures; and be competent in the operation and troubleshooting of the X-ray system.

Additional requirements are as follows:

For Cardiac EP Techs: Current ARRT certification, graduation from an accredited school of radiologic technology, and one or more years of EP experience; OR high school graduate with two or more years of EP lab experience; OR current RCIS or RCES active status or equivalent in a health-related field. Current RCIS or RCES active status or equivalent in health-related field preferred.

For Cardiac EP RNs: One year of experience specifically working in EP, licensure as a registered nurse in the state of South Carolina or possession of a current compact/multi-state license as a registered nurse in a recognized NCSBN Compact State and is not a permanent resident of SC. RCIS or RCES credential preferred. Must have a current American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider Card.

Provides moderate sedation during the heart cath procedures, appropriately monitoring and documenting vital signs. 700 cases per year. Under general supervision, the Registered Nurse II provides individualized, goal-directed patient care to families and patients at the competent level utilizing the principles and practices of the nursing process; delivers safe and effective care and interacts with other members of the health care team to achieve desired results.

The MUSC adult cardiac catheterization lab is on the cutting edge of interventional cardiology. Procedures performed range from simple diagnostic imaging of coronary arteries to complex interventional and structural cases restoring blood-flow to long closed parts of the heart.  The Cath lab operates during regular work hours Monday through Friday but is available on call 24/7, 365 days a year.  The environment is fast paced and the ability to remain calm, think critically and act quickly, are key to success.  The new grad will learn to scrub and monitor basic cath lab cases.  Starting with basic sterile technique, the nurse will progress to understanding required equipment and more advanced cases as their individual skills develop.  They will develop a thorough understanding of the cardiac system, anatomy and physiology.  In time, they will learn to administer moderate sedation and respond to emergency situations.

Assists physicians in the interpretation of special and complex invasive imaging (ie. IVUS/coronary doppler) Performs minor maintenance and quality assurance of equipment and devices in the laboratory. Cooperates with Biomedical Dept. upkeep and quality assurance of radiographic, hemodynamic and other equipment. Demonstrates effective leadership skills while interacting with cath lab personnel. Supports departmental goals by facilitating change and providing feedback or constructive criticism to cath lab management. Performs other related duties as assigned.
